Memphis cuisine, like the music resonating down Beale Street, reflects the cultural interface between Chicago and the Mississippi Delta. It is no surprise that barbeque is the dominant local cuisine, with traditional Southern and Cajun cooking close behind, and that even upscale restaurants compete for the distinction of ‘best in Memphis.’ On one of their visits, legend has it that the Rolling Stones ordered 1,000 pounds of ribs from Rendezvous. Memphis also is becoming a popular contemporary alternative to older nightlife and party destinations like Las Vegas, which in turn is drawing visitors with sophisticated palates familiar with fine dining in larger cities. Memphis dining options satisfy international appetites with a good selection of award-winning Asian, French, Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Mediterranean and Mexican restaurants. The music scene also draws a youthful clientele with discerning tastes in vegetarian and natural food alternatives, as well as outdoor cafes that provide a sampling of all of the tastes, sights and sounds of Memphis.
